What to Expect at Commencement

As you prepare for your visit to UC San Diego’s Commencement 2022, there are a few things to know.

First, the health and safety of guests and graduates is our top priority. To ensure a safe experience for all, please consider the following:

  • All participants, regardless of age, should be fully vaccinated (two doses plus booster) or have had a negative COVID-19 test result within 24 hours prior to the ceremony. Testing with UC San Diego specifically is not required.
  • Guests may be required to complete a symptom screening upon entry.
  • Masking is strongly recommended, particularly in areas where distancing is not possible or large crowds are present.

Ceremonies will run about two hours. Please be prepared to stay for the duration of the ceremony as a courtesy to fellow graduates and guests.

Traffic around campus will be extremely heavy, so please plan to arrive early. This will allow time for parking, safety screening, and walking to the venue entrance, to access RIMAC Field or RIMAC Arena. Gates will open at least two hours prior to All Campus Commencement, one hour prior to each college ceremony, and 30 minutes prior to each Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, Rady School of Management, or School of Global Policy and Strategy ceremony. Keep in mind, traffic will be heavy leaving campus after the ceremonies as well. Please plan for additional time to depart.

June in San Diego is traditionally warm, with temperatures in the mid- to upper 70s during the day. However, mornings can be chilly and damp. Check the forecast before you head out and plan to dress in layers or wear a light jacket or wrap that can be removed as the temperature rises. We also recommend wearing sunscreen and/or a hat; there is no shade at the venue. Umbrellas are not permitted as they can block the view of other attendees.

Complimentary water will be available. Please bring your own empty reusable water bottle. Make sure to review Commencement 2022 transportation and security for additional details and a list of prohibited items.

You can order graduate gifts at the UC San Diego Bookstore, along with announcements, diploma frames and more. Pre-order flowers or leis here.

For guests who are unable to join in person, a livestream of the undergraduate college, Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, and professional school commencement ceremonies will be broadcast on this website at the scheduled date and time of your graduate’s ceremony.
